My Data Page

Summary.

This is an overview of the data I collected

I first took a look at the entirety of the United States. Overall, there were more searches in favor of gun control, but there was still a number of searches for purchasing guns. I then took a look at different states and how they contributed to the overarching statistic

The first state I chose to look at is Arkansas, a strong example of a conservative state. The frequency of both search terms spiked in the days following the shooting. Although there were more searches for gun control, there was a hefty portion of the population that searches for buying guns.

I broke it down even further to look at which regions within Arkansas had the most searches in either topic. The city with the most searches for buying guns, Springfield, has a population of about 1,200 people and is a very rural town. Bigger cities such as Jonesboro that has a population around 75,000 showed search trends all in favor of gun control. Cities tend to be inherently more progresive and liberal, so this date makes sense. In contrast, I researched the trends in California. As predicted, the searches for gun control heavily outweighed those for buying guns. Breaking it down by region, I can see that the Sacremento region contributes a lot to the gun buying searches. The Bay Area does as well, surprisingly, but not anything compared to Arkansas
